The GEOID : Earth's Gravity Map
ππ‘ππ ππ‘ππ©π ππ¬ πππ«ππ‘, ππππ₯π₯π²? ππππ ππ‘π πππ¨π’π! We usually think of Earth as a smooth ball β but its true shape is far stranger! Scientists use a model called the geoid to map it precisely. π ππ‘ππ π’π¬ ππ‘π πππ¨π’π? The geoid is a hypothetical Earth surface representing mean sea level if there were no winds, currents, or tides. Itβs not a perfect sphere β itβs lumpy and uneven because Earthβs gravity varies from place to place, often due to unusual concentrations of mass like mountain ranges or ocean trenches. This bumpy, invisible surface is the true reference shape used for mapping, surveying, and engineering β a carpenterβs level and a plumb bob both align with the geoid, not a flat mathematical sphere! π°οΈ πππππ¬π ππππ πππ¬πππ«ππ‘ NASAβs Scientific Visualization Studio just released a striking new geoid visualization (July 2026). It shows that geoid height ranges from +85 metres near Iceland to β106 metres over southern India β a difference of nearly 200 metres in Earthβs βtrue sea levelβ shape! This model, called GOCO06s, is built from over a billion satellite observations collected over 15 years across 19 satellites , including NASAβs GRACE mission and ESAβs GOCE mission . π‘ Missions like GRACE-FO continue this work today, tracking how the geoid subtly shifts due to melting ice, moving water, and even magma movement deep inside our planet. π Next time you look at a world map, remember: Earth isnβt a perfect sphere β itβs a giant, gently wobbling βgravity potatoβ! π₯π
